We’re all missing seeing our favourite artists perform live. Hopefully it won’t be too long before we can experience live music again. In the meantime, why not watch a music documentary? You never know, your favourite artist might just pop up.
1. The Most Dangerous Band in the World (2016)
A must watch for any Guns N’ Roses fan. This chronicles the meteoric rise, controversies, fallouts and music of one of the most recognisable rock bands of all time. With previously unseen interviews with members such as Matt Sorum and archive footage of Slash and Duff McKagan, this story of success and breakup is revealed.
2. Glastonbury (2006)
We all missed the festival season over the summer. While we all hope we can be back at our favourite events next year, get yourself in the spirit by checking out Julien Temple’s tribute to Glastonbury. With archive footage of some of the greatest live sets of all time, Temple tells the story of the world’s greatest music festival. From the humble beginning to the worldwide sensation. If that doesn’t get you in the festival spirit, nothing will.
3. Hitsville: The Making of Motown (2019)
Motown launched the careers of some of the world’s favourite artists. This documentary is your chance to see how it all began. With interviews from a host of stars, this documentary covers Motown’s cultural impact on society, the history of one of the world’s most famous record labels and features a host of fantastic archive footage.
4. Letter to You (2020)
Springsteen is back! This time Bruce lets us in on the process of writing and recording his new album of the same name. He also documents his career working with the E Street Band, how they came to be and his joy at performing with the same people for decades. For any Bruce fans, this is yet another in a long line of exciting releases.
5. Long Hot Summers (2020)
For any fans of Paul Weller or The Style Council, this is a must watch. From the breakup of The Jam, to the formation and success of the Style Council, this documentary takes us through a key shift in Weller’s career that helped cement the foundations for future work and collaborations. From interviews with The Style Council, to archive materials, this is another excellent watch.
