Roberto Firmino scored a late winner against Tottenham to take Liverpool three points clear at the top of the Premier League.
The Brazilian powered a header into the top corner from an Andy Robertson corner in the 90th minute to spoil what had appeared to be a perfectly executed Jose Mourinho game plan, in a match that Liverpool dominated but Spurs had the best chances on the break.
Liverpool had complete control of the opening half-hour, showing how they are on a now 66-match unbeaten run at Anfield.
Mohamed Salah got the luck their pressure deserved after 26 minutes when he pounced on a loose ball in the box, his shot looping off a combination of Eric Dier and Toby Alderweireld and in off the far post, with Hugo Lloris helpless.
Tottenham showed no signs of threatening a second win in 27 at Anfield before Son Heung-Min equalised from nowhere on 33 minutes, steadying himself and slotting inside the near post having been freed by Giovani Lo Celso following a burst through midfield.
Embed from Getty ImagesIn typical Mourinho fashion, it was Spurs’ first shot, although Steven Bergwijn could have put them ahead with their second immediately after half-time, but toe-poked wide.
Liverpool nearly fell foul of the smash-and-grab again after an hour when Bergwijn suddenly found himself clean through after a Son flick-on but could only hit the far post, before Harry Kane somehow headed a corner into the ground and over.
Tottenham retreated late, looking to consolidate the point they came for, before Liverpool’s sustained pressure paid off through Firmino.
