Manchester United 0–2 Manchester City

Manchester City have booked their place in their fourth successive Carabao Cup final after beating Manchester United two-nil at Old Trafford.

Despite an end to end first half, it took till the 50th minute for the breakthrough to come when John Stones bundled home Phil Foden’s free kick to put the Citizens in the driving seat after Harry Maguire failed to clear.

City then killed the game late on with Fernandinho’s volley from 25-yards ending up inside Dean Henderson’s near post, bouncing through a huge gap in the crowded penalty area in front of Henderson.

United thought they’d taken the lead inside two minutes when Marcus Rashford’s shot was pushed away by Zack Steffen into the helpless Stones who saw it comically roll into off him into the net. However, the offside flag came to their rescue.

The offside flag then came to United’s aid when a typical slick City move lead to Ilkay Gundogan turning Foden’s cross into the far corner, but the German had strayed too early.

Steffen was then forced into a top save, plucking Bruno Fernandes’ 25-yard effort out of the top corner and wide. Only a couple minutes later it was City’s talismans time to go close, Kevin De Bruyne smacking the post with a strike from the same distance.

City then saw another goal disallowed for offside, this time Foden making his run too early before slotting through Henderson’s legs.

United push for an equaliser after going one down was in vain with them never looking like scoring, rarely testing Steffen. Solskjaer must now pick his side up after a fourth consecutive semi-final defeat as they host Watford in the FA Cup on the weekend.
