Burnley 0-1 Manchester United
A second-half strike from Paul Pogba sends Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side top of the Premier League in a hard-fought encounter at Turf Moor.
It took 16 minutes for the first shot on target as a deep cross from Luke Shaw was met by Bruno Fernandes whose shot lacked power and ended up safely in the hands of Nick Pope.
Then a controversial phase of play as players from both sides could’ve seen red. A dangerous challenge from Shaw went unpunished on-field and led to a United counter-attack where Edinson Cavani was fouled by Robbie Brady who was the last defender. Referee, Kevin Friend, decided not to take action against either of the two players.
Harry Maguire had the ball in the back of the net after he met another deep Shaw cross but Friend had ruled that he was too forceful against Erik Pieters and a foul was given.
The visitors came out the better side in the second half which resulted in Burnley dropping deeper and allowing the likes of Paul Pogba and Fernandes to create chances for the likes of Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford.
The pressure finally told in the 70th minute of the game as Rashford picked up the ball on the right-hand side and floated a ball across the 18-yard-box which was met by Pogba, whose drilled volley deflected through Pope’s legs to put United one-up.
The only concern for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be the injury Martial looked to have suffered in the last moments of the game, chasing for Cavani’s through pass which resulted in the Frenchman being replaced by Axel Tuanzebe.
United go top of the table for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, whilst Burnley remain 16th, five clear of the relegation places.
