Miguel Almiron scored twice as nine-man Newcastle held on to heap further misery on Southampton in a 3-2 thriller at St James’ Park.
In a thrilling encounter on Tyneside, Newcastle raced into a two-goal lead when Joe Willock got off the mark for his new club, finishing off a good team move from an Allan Saint-Maximin cross, before Miguel Almiron’s shot from a narrow-angle deflected off Jan Bednarek, a goal which was handed to the Newcastle midfielder by the dubious goals panel.
Southampton then clawed a goal back when Takumi Minamino also got off the mark for his new club, brilliantly taking on a Bertrand pass in his stride before firing a shot into the roof of the net.
Almiron capitalized on some sloppy play from Alex McCarthy in the Southampton goal to race through and score his second of the game and his third goal of the campaign on the stroke of half-time.
James Ward-Prowse’s wonderful free-kick had given Saints hope of rescuing a point even before Jeff Hendrick was sent off for two bookings and Fabian Schar went off injured after three subs were already made by Steve Bruce, but a resilient Newcastle held on for the crucial three points.

Southampton meanwhile failed to respond after their humiliating 9-0 defeat to Manchester United in midweek, succumbing to their fifth defeat in a row for the first time since 1998. A result which leaves them in 12th place on 29 points.
