Richie Wellens leaves Salford City after parting ways with the club by mutual consent.
Richie Wellens became the Salford City manager on the 4th November 2020 replacing Graham Alexander. When Alexander was sacked co-owner Paul Scholes became the temporary manager of Salford City for almost a month before Wellens became the permanent manager. Since becoming the Salford City manager Wellens was in charge for 30 games where he won 11 games including the rescheduled EFL Trophy final against Portsmouth and got his team two places away from the playoffs in League 2. However, he has now has left Salford City which a lot of questions need to be answered.
Salford City’s Season so far
At the start of the season the owners of Salford City, The Class of 92; Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt and David Beckham, stated they expected their team to win the league and gain promotion into League 1. In the Sky documentary “Class of 92: Full Time” before the current season started Gary Neville stated “There is no excuses now, they have to win the league. That squad, that budget, they have to win the league, that’s it.”
After five league games in the season, Alexander was sacked as Salford was in fifth place and hadn’t lost a game to that point. After Alexander was sacked Scholes became temporary manager until Wellens was appointed on the 4th November. Since Wellens became the Salford manager The Ammies had been very inconsistent but were able to win the EFL Trophy against Portsmouth just over a week ago. However, he has now left Salford City via mutual consent.
With Wellens losing his job there is a lot of questions being asked of the Class of 92 with their philosophy in dealing with managers. In 2018 Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley left the managerial role at Salford after three promotions in four seasons by mutual consent due to irreconcilable differences.
Then Alexander got sacked after five games this season after getting his team promoted into the football league. Now Wellens has left the club two places from the playoffs and winning the EFL Trophy.
The Class of 92 played under one manager under the majority of their careers so seeing the way they treat managers is quite surprising.
Salford City can still achieve promotion this season however there is a lot of work to be done and they will need to find a manager who the owner can trust and truly believe can be their long term manager.
