Diego Llorente scored a late equaliser for Leeds to deny Liverpool a place in the top four temporarily – as uncertainty reigns over what that would mean following the announcement of the controversial European Super League on Sunday.
The Reds are one of 12 clubs to agree to join a breakaway European Super League “to commence as soon practicable” with a possiblity that even if the competition does not start start next season, UEFA have discussed the probability of banning clubs – including the “big six” in the Premier League – from European competition for their deflection.
Fans of Leeds United and other clubs gathered outside Elland Road to stage a protest – during which a Liverpool club shirt was burned – and a plane flew over the stadium displaying an anti-Super League message as well as Leeds players wearing anti-Super League training tops saying ‘Earn it’ next to the Champions League logo and ‘Football is for the fans’. A banner behind one goal had the same message.
Reds boss Jurgen Klopp, said he does not like the idea of the ESL and that he and his players had no say in its decision making.
Liverpool dominated the first half and went ahead when Trent Alexander-Arnold received a superb Thiago cross field pass, before squaring it to Sadio Mane to score his first Premier League goal since January, a run of 10 games.
Embed from Getty ImagesLeeds United came back firing after the break, and had chances to level when Alisson saved brilliantly saved close-range efforts from Jack Harrison and Tyler Roberts, before Patrick Bamford hit the woodwork.
However, Leeds United were rewarded for their efforts and found their equaliser when defender Diego Llorente headed in a Jack Harrison corner, his first goal in English football.
It’s a result which means Liverpool miss the chance to climb into their top four after West Ham’s defeat to Newcastle at the weekend. Klopp’s side remain in seventh place in the table, two points behind the Hammers in fourth.
Leeds United remain in 10th place, and after winning against Premier League champions elect Manchester City last weekend, have now taken another giant stride with this result in their quest through their first campaign back in the Premier League.
However, much of the talk will continue to be centred around the recent announcement of the European Super League, during a midweek packed with more Premier League games, involving 3 of the “big six” who are said to be in agreement to the new proposed plans, with Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester City all in action.
