Tottenham defeated Wolves to pick up their second victory in as many games at the start of the 2021/22 season thanks to an early penalty from Dele Alli. Although Wolves dominated the game throughout, the North London side defended resolutely and battled hard to keep a clean sheet.
Manager – Nuno Espirito Santo (7) = The Portuguese conjured up another victory and a clean sheet and he is clearly instilling belief and resilience into this Spurs side; Espirito Santo dealt with going back to his old side brilliantly. However throughout the game Spurs did lack control of the ball but the substitutions of Giovani Lo Celso and Harry Kane helped the North London side to see out the game.
Hugo Lloris (9) = The club captain marked his record breaking 300th premier league appearance with a brilliant display. The Frenchman made a brilliant save to stop Adama Traore from equalising as he went one-on-one. The club captain also produced a brilliant kick forward to set Steven Bergwijn in on goal.
Japhet Tanganga (5) = The academy graduate had a pretty torrid time against the pace and power of Traore and struggled to stop him from getting past. However, the youngster stuck it out and was part of an important clean sheet.
Davinson Sanchez (7) = The Colombian dealt with the threat of Raul Jimenez pretty well and kept his second clean sheet of the season. There were a couple of dicey moments where the defender made mistakes but overall he defended well.
Eric Dier (6) = Like Sanchez, Dier defended well throughout the game and stopped Wolves from creating too many huge chances. However the former Sporting Lisbon man gave the ball away running up the pitch which led to a huge chance for Wolves, but luckily Traore couldn’t convert.
Sergio Reguilon (8) = The former Real Madrid defender carried on where he left off from the first game of the season and gave his winger no space at all. Reguilon also played a brilliant pass through for Dele who then won the penalty after being fouled by Jose Sa.
Oliver Skipp (7) = The young midfielder continued his positive start to the season in the North London’s side midfield and worked brilliantly to limit the chances that Wolves had. However, the academy graduate will need to improve his confidence on the ball to increase the level of his performances
Pierre-Emile Højbjerg (8) = The Danish midfielder has proved to be a wonderful acquisition since he joined the club from Southampton last summer.
Dele Alli (9) = The English midfielder provided the only goal of the game when he ghosted in behind the Wolves defence and won a penalty after Jose Sa took him down; the number 20 then converted his penalty brilliantly to ultimately win the game. Dele also worked tirelessly throughout the game defensively by tackling and blocking shots.
Steven Bergwijn (7) = The Dutch forward was a threat throughout the game down the left hand side and tested Jose Sa multiple times in the second half. The former PSV man produced a brilliant piece of skill to get in behind Nelson Semedo and set up Kane, whose shot was saved.
Lucas Moura (5) = Despite the Brazilian forward being one of the best players against Manchester City, he was disappointing in the match and had little impact at all from the wing.
Heung-Min Son (5) = Son seemed to pick up a slight injury in the warm up and for his standards, the South-Korean was not very influential throughout the game. The forward also missed a chance when he was played in behind and his cross was blocked by Max Kilman.
Substitutions
Giovani Lo Celso (7) = The Copa America winner helped Spurs to gain a lot more control in midfield when he replaced Lucas in the 67th minute. The Argentine’s technical ability allowed him to stop Wolves’ dominance and help Spurs see out the victory.
Harry Kane (8) = As the England captain entered the pitch every fan in the stadium was singing about him, every commentator discussing him and most of the country was tweeting about him. However, none of that phased the Tottenham striker as he showed his class by holding the ball up and getting Spurs up the pitch.
