Home   /   Tony Russell: “Ollie Tanner best I ever worked with”

Lewes manager Tony Russell praised Tanner after the 5-0 against Leatherhead. Tanner was creative all throughout but stood out for his lack of finishing.

He spent sweet words and said: “I had a go at him at half-time: I thought it was one of his poorest games.

“[But] I would say he is the best I ever worked with. He was found by a friend, and I don’t usually sign players off training, but I said: give him a contract. I remember saying to Stewart he is special. We have exciting prospects; we want to get some young hungry players.”

Lewes’s manager revealed he doesn’t look at the table: “When we get to fifteen games, I will look. Just keep winning game after game and that’s how you get silverware. That’s the mentality.”

When asked if happy, Russell said: “Three points, clean sheet, five goals, but frustrated at the chances we missed consistently. At half-time I was angry. We disrespected Leatherhead. We had chances and tried to walk the ball in, we took too many touches and treated each other.”

If, after such win, the manager still cares about the details, Lewes are up for something great. Russell’s hard-working nature may leave positive prospects for the season to come.
