Hello everyone! Freddie Humphry-Wakefield here from The Amex Satdium bringing you live coverage of tonight’s Premier League fixture between Brighton & Hove Albion and Newcastle United. Feel free to leave any comments and I hope you enjoy reading this live blog.
Here’s a look at the starting elevens for both sides:
As stated above, Jacob Murphy, Jonjo Shelvey and Miguel Almiron come in for Javier Manquillo, Sean Longstaff and Ryan Fraser from last week’s 0-3 home defeat against league leaders Chelsea.
Both sides come into this game with relatively poor form, Brighton have drawn four and lost one in their last five games in all competitions, scoring five goals and conceding eight. However, if Brighton can win this match, they could go fifth in the league and be one point off fourth place West Ham.
Newcastle have lost three and drawn two, scoring five and conceding ten in their last five games. Also, The Magpies haven’t kept a clean sheet this season, the only side in the Premier League who are yet to have one. After Norwich’s earlier 1-2 win away at Brentford, The Magpies now sit bottom of the table with only four points, all of which have been draws. They are the only Premier League side this season to have not won a game.
MIN 1 – David Coote blows his whistle, and we’re underway here at The Amex!
MIN 5 – First chance of the game for Brighton. Tariq Lamptey displays some wonderful footwork down the right-hand side, crosses the ball in and finds the head of Leandro Trossard, who’s effort is comfortably saved by Karl Darlow.
MIN 6 – Newcastle now have their first chance. Jacob Murphy drags it wide of the post with an ambitious effort.
MIN 8 – First corner of the match here. Trossard whips it in, finds the head of Shane Duffy, whose effort again is caught by Darlow.
MIN 19 – SERIOUS PENALTY SHOUT FOR BRIGHTON! Trossard is brought down by Ciaran Clarke in the penalty area, but nothing is given. Maybe VAR will take a look?
MIN 23 – GOAL – 1-0 BRIGHTON – LEANDRO TROSSARD CONVERTS! He hits it slighty to the goalkeeper’s right, Darlow dives the right way, but can’t get his hand to it. The home side lead here at The Amex.
MIN 41 – Newcastle get themselves a rare chance as they now have a corner. Matt Ritchie bends it into the box, and Allan Saint Maximin’s effort is cleared off the line by Lewis Dunk. However, the Newcastle winger is offside.
MIN 45 – Three minutes added on in the first half.
HALFTIME – BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION 1-0 NEWCASTLE UNITED
A rather bland first-half comes to an end, and with soon-to-be new manager Eddie Howe in the stands, that first half performance from Newcastle really shows how much that side need him. They looked really poor in that first half, and Brighton completely controlled possession. It’s clear to see why Newcastle are ranked 19th for average possession in the league with 38.4%. They’ve barely had a kick.
MIN 46 – We’re back underway at The Amex! Brighton make a half-time substitution, seeing Enock Mwepu making way for Alexis Mac Allister.
MIN 51 – First chance of the second half falls to Brighton. Trossard’s curling shot goes well wide of the right post.
MIN 55 – Trossard pulls it back for Adam Lallana, but his right-footed effort goes wide.
MIN 64 – Another change by Graham Potter. Neal Maupay comes on for Solly March.
MIN 66 – EQUALISER FOR NEWCASTLE! ISAAC HAYDEN MAKES IT 1-1! Ritchie’s cross is headed down by Clarke at the back post, and there’s Hayden to volley it beyond Robert Sanchez.
MIN 74 – Newcastle make their first change, as Miguel Almiron departs for Joelinton. Brighton also make a change, seeing Lamptey go off for Adam Webster.
MIN 84 – Shocking call by David Coote. Jacob Murphy is pretty much cuddling Maupay and can’t take his hands off him, Murphy himself then goes down, and Maupay is shown the yellow card. Really poor from the referee there. Should’ve been Murphy receiving the booking.
MIN 90 – There’s five minutes of added time here at The Amex for this second half. Can either side grab a winner?
MIN 90+1 – HANG ON JUST A MOMENT! VAR yet again is intervening, this time it’s for a potential red card for Sanchez for a last man challenge on Callum Wilson which David Coote had originally waved away.
MIN 90+2 – SANCHEZ IS OFF! A straight red for the Brighton goalkeeper, and with all their substitutes already used, Lewis Dunk is going in goal for the final few minutes. Great drama here at The Amex!
FULL-TIME – BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION 1-1 NEWCASTLE UNITED
And there we have it! It finishes all sqaure between these two sides at The Amex. VAR making the headlines here as it gave both a penalty and a red card.
Brighton are now without a win in their last seven attempts in all competitons, and will want to go into the international break looking to pick up all three points in their next fixture away to 15th place Aston Villa. Brighton are now sixth in the league with 17 points from 11 games.
Newcastle are still without a win this season, but remain 19th with five points, only by goal difference due to Norwich City’s earlier 1-2 win away at Brentford today. Newcastle will be searching for their first win of the season when they host Brentford after the international break. The Magpies will also be hoping Eddie Howe will be their new manager for the upcoming fixture.
