Joe Root won the toss and decided to bat on green wicket which would go on to help the Australia seam bowlers. After Jimmy Anderson wasn’t named in the squad in the build up to the first test, it was also announced before the game that Stuart Broad wasn’t in the team.
Josh Carey got given his Baggy Green Cap by fellow wicket keeper Adam Gilchrist before his test match debut. Travis Head was picked ahead of Usman Khawaja and Mitchell Starc was picked ahead of Jhye Richardson.
Australia got off to a brilliant start to the series with Starc, justifying his selection ahead of the game, getting a wicket with the first ball getting rid of Rory Burns, with a in-swinging yorker hitting the Englishman’s leg stump. The wicket with the first ball of the series is rivalling the start of the 2007/08 series where Steve Harmison bowled a wide to second slip.
Josh Hazzlewood continued Australia’s perfect start getting rid of Dawid Malan and England captain Joe Root for a duck which left England 11/3. Australia’s new captain Pat Cummins was able to get rid of the returning Ben Stokes when he was on five runs.
Haseeb Hameed, Ollie Pope and Jos Buttler had some resistance however they couldn’t stop England in getting a low score. Cummins was able to get in first five wicket haul in Ashes cricket on his first game Australia test captain. Cameron Green was able able to get his first wicket in test cricket has he got rid of Pope.
After England were bowled out it started raining in Brisbane so Australia didn’t get to start their innings, however they are clearly on top of the game already. England will need to get some early wickets tomorrow if they have any chance in getting back into this game or they will be facing a up hill battle.
