Home   /   “We aren’t taking anything for granted” – USA vs Costa Rica preview

The USA men’s team have the chance to gain automatic qualification for the Qatar 2022 World Cup as they face Costa Rica in their final group qualifying game.

The squad are currently in 2nd place of the group on 25 points having won seven of their 13 matches. If they’re able to stay in the top three places and stay above Costa Rica, the side will be playing at a World Cup for the first time since 2014. However, if the team lose by six goals or more tonight, their chances to play in Qatar will rest on further play-off matches.

Having not won at the National Stadium of Costa Rica before, Gregg Berhalter, the teams head coach said, “We aren’t taking anything for granted. We’re not going to be cautious or sit back. We are coming here with aggression and an intention to win.

“Throughout the qualifiers, we’ve always had a winning mentality and the group have embraced any challenges from the beginning. It would be strange now after 13 games to differ. We know we are potentially 90 minutes away from a world cup but now is not the time to take our foot off the gas.

“Lets be honest we wish we could’ve won all our games in the group, but it’s not realistic. Its been a challenge with a lot of ups and downs but we expected that.”

Reginald Cannon, who scored against Costa Rica in an international friendly last year, has been confirmed to be back training with the squad by Berhalter after recently contracting Covid-19.

Kick off time at the National Stadium of Costa Rica for the UK is 02:05 and fans can keep up with the match on Sky Sports and BBC Sports live coverage on their website.
