Home   /   A sad end to a fantastic era: Roberto Martinez rounds off six years in charge with a goalless result against group runners up Croatia. Here’s the match reaction:

Last night featured Croatia taking on Belgium in the final group stage game of the 2022 Qatar World Cup. A solid defensive display from the checkered ones frustrated Belgium, with Dejan Lovren stating: “we knew it would be a tough game especially when we look at the other sides, the names and the quality”.

The defender praised Belgium, a nation tipped as one of the favourites to win the competition, a side who wave a farewell to manager Roberto Martinez, who said his goodbyes: “Its been an amazing 6 years and we’ve done everything we wanted to do as a national team. We are Extremely proud and the real fans appreciate this generation of players”.

The credit also goes to Croatia who capped off their World Cup group stage campaign with a solid performance that Lovren described as a “tough one”, whilst remaining in control throughout the game and Croatia escaped a tough group with two goalless results and a 4-1 win against Canada.

Croatia will next face Japan, a team not to be underestimated this World cup after they defeated favourites Spain 2-1 last night too. Lovren looks forward to the Round of 16 match: “Its a good point and we are experienced in this phase and we will never surrender”. “Now we will watch the other teams ,with enough days to recover and repair”.  The Round of 16 game is at 3pm next Monday.
