Manchester United have announced an increase in losses for the 12-month fiscal year ending June 2022 of 25.3%, with losses of £115.5 million this annual year, compared to losses of £92.2 million for the annual fiscal year of 2021.
The Red Devils finished sixth in the Premier League, securing Europa League qualification. This contributed to a decrease in broadcasting revenue of 15.7% from the 2021 12-month fiscal year to the 2022 12-month fiscal year. United finished second in the league in 2021 and qualified for the Champions League, earning £254.8 million, compared to £214.9 million in 2022.
United brought in several players in the 2022 Summer transfer window, including Antony for £85 million, Casemiro for £70 million and Lisandro Martinez for £56.7 million. These signings meant the Red Devils employee benefit expenses increased £61.6m in the annual year of 2022.
Ten Hag’s side benefitted from the return of fans to Old Trafford, because the previous season, only the last match of the season had fans in attendance. Match day revenue for the 12-month fiscal year ending 30th June 2022 was £110.5m, an increase of 1456.3% from the match day revenue of just £7.1m in the fiscal year of 2021.
Commercial revenue increased 11% from £232.2 million in the 2021 annual year to £257.8 million, in the 2022 12-month fiscal year, due to new sponsorship agreements. The return of fans to the stadium meant that commercial revenue increased, because the retail, merchandising, apparel and product licensing revenue increased 19.5% from the previous annual year.
