Everton moved out of the bottom three and towards Premier League safety on Monday evening after thrashing Brighton & Hove Albion 5-1 at the American Express Community Stadium.
Embed from Getty ImagesFollowing a run of 13 away matches without a victory, Everton convincingly dispatched a high-flying Brighton side to move out of the relegation zone and into 16th place. Braces from Abdoulaye Doucoure and Dwight McNeil as well as a Jason Steele own goal made sure the Toffees picked up all three points for the first time in almost two months. The result moves Everton up to 17th place in the table, two points above Leicester City who currently occupy the final relegation spot. With only three matches of the Premier League season remaining, the victory massively increases the chances of Sean Dyche’s men remaining in the Premier League for the 2023/24 campaign.
Despite their impressive win against Manchester United on Thursday evening, Albion’s chances of qualifying for next season’s Europa League have hit a stumbling block following defeat to Dyche’s side. Roberto De Zerbi’s men are faced with a difficult run in, having to face Arsenal, Newcastle and Manchester City in the final few weeks of the season. Brighton remain seventh place in the table, two points behind sixth place Tottenham Hotspur having played two less games than the North-London side.
Everton will be looking to build up some further momentum when they welcome Manchester City to Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon whilst Brighton will be looking to bounce back at the Emirates Stadium against title challengers Arsenal.
