Pep Guardiola’s side provided constant pressure against the Seagulls within the first ten minutes. Belgian Jeremy Doku proved to be the dangerman, making a fantastic run into the penalty area and getting the ball to Julian Alvarez, who converted a left-footed chance, allowing City to take the lead. Alvarez now has 17 goals in 17 games at the Etihad Stadium.

Brighton’s defence looked shaky and in the 19th minute, their mistakes saw Erling Haaland receive the ball. Getting to the edge of the penalty area, he converts his first chance of the game into a 2-0 lead with a left-footed thunder strike, as well as his ninth goal in nine Premier League games.

Brighton looked more threatening in the second half with Kaoru Mitoma being the visitors’ danger-man: winning a free-kick and having a shot deflected.

The 73rd minute proved to be a fantastic display of football as Alvarez started to bring the pressure for the Citizens again. Brighton then commenced the counterattack as Mitoma made another brilliant run into the box. Poor City defending got the ball to Ansu Fati who put the Seagulls back in the game.

Despite Manuel Akanji being sent off in the 90+5th minute, City held on until the end, securing all three points in a narrow 2-1 victory, breaking the record of the longest winning streak at home in the Premier League (21).
