Home   /   Freak Out Fashion: How to be Coat-ure
Several winter coats hanging on a coat rack on the wall, different colors and fluffy hoods, the wall is yellow

This weeks fashion freak out came with the changing of the seasons.

My issue was that I didn’t know how to wrap up for the winter months without ruining my outfit. I would end up covering my outfit entirely with a pretty boring coat or wearing the warmest thing I had rather than what went best with my outfit. Essentially, I didn’t know how to incorporate a coat into my outfit, rather it was its own separate entity.

Luckily my fashion fails are your fashion favours because I have been learning how to solve this issue and have graciously decided to share my findings with you.

Tip #1: If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em

Looking at current fashion icon Gabbriette for inspiration, we can learn how to embrace the coat.

Making the coat your entire outfit, especially if its masterpiece in itself like Gabbriette’s fluffy number, is a great way to cut out all the stress of things not going together.

If you wear one big coat, throw on some boots and accessorise like crazy, you’ll have yourself a very warm, very stylish outfit.

Tip #2: Don’t be so bleak

Teddy Swims but he also slays in this tartan coat!

In a similar vein to my last piece of advice, making your coat the outfit, rather than making it a part of the outfit is a great way to be keep warm and stylish this winter.

A different way of achieving this would be to get some colours, patterns, and textures into your coats. Take it from singer Teddy Swims whose tartan coat looks both bold and cosy.

If you have a particularly interesting coat like Swims, whether that be because its multi coloured or patterned, the rest of your outfit can be easily formed around these colours.

You can either match your accessories to the colours of your coat, or you can let the coat shine and stick to an all neutral outfit underneath.

Tip #3: Wintour’s Winter

When looking for fashion inspiration, you can’t really go wrong by looking at Vogue America’s Editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.

Her sophisticated white coat allows for the red of her outfit underneath to steal the eye away from her jacket and towards her outfit. Always leave them wanting more.

Essentially, give us a little sneak peak of your outfit from underneath your coat by wearing a neutral colour over a boldly coloured outfit. That way, the effort you put into your outfit is still being appreciated without leaving you in any danger of hypothermia.

Tip #4: Boots, Bag, Body

Kendall Jenner may not know how to cut a cucumber, but she sure knows how to dress.

She has successfully demonstrated the 3 B’s when it comes to styling a coat: Boots, Bag, Body.

Before you get nervous and think that the Body portion equates to being thin, let me stop you right there. The Body portion essentially means wearing the coat shape/style that suits your body’s silhouette the best (but boots, bag, silhouette didn’t sound as good so, body it is!). Wearing a coat that fits you properly is the easiest way to elevate your winter outfits – unless the Michelin man look is what you’re going for then ignore this and all power to you!

The first 2 B’s basically mean that matching your shoes, bag, and coat make the outfit look way more cohesive while still keeping you warm. Having cohesion in any outfit makes your choices look purposeful, so don’t forget the 3 B’s.

Tip #5: Monochrome moments

Who are we to question modern music’s mum and dad Rhianna and A$AP Rocky?

The couple have boldly decreed that sunglasses are part of the winter uniform as they both matched their coats to their eyewear during Paris fashion week.

This is an excellent way to blend your coat into your outfit (and to be prepared for any weather). Similar to the 3 B’s it creates a sense of cohesion in the outfit – and can bring a little colour in too.

Wearing the same colour throughout most or all of your outfit is a great way to bring everything together. Monochrome outfits are especially beneficial in the winter because depth is added to monochrome outfits through layering, which is wildly important in winter months.

So there you have it, don’t be afraid to be both bold and boiling this winter!
