Mikel Arteta saw his Arsenal team suffer yet another blow to their title hopes as they forfeited a two goal lead in a 2-2 draw with Aston Villa.

Arteta thought he saw his side score the winner in the 88th minute only for a replay to show the ball had gone in via the hand of Kai Havertz, with VAR swiftly intervening to rule the goal out.

Gabriel Martinelli and Havertz scored either side of half time to give the Gunners a comfortable lead but a point blank header from Youri Tielemans and a well placed volley from Ollie Watkins saw Villa complete the fightback and earn themselves a strong point.

The result means that ex Arsenal manager Unai Emery has not lost at this ground since his sacking in 2019, although has lost to his old team on two occasions at Villa park.

Arsenal now sit on 44 points, six behind leaders Liverpool with the reds holding a game in hand while only three points ahead of Nottingham Forest who are still to play this weekend.

A monumental away point for Villa sees them climb above Man City and reach 36 points, two points off Newcastle and the Champions League places.
