Brighton collected just one more point in a 0-0 League Cup home draw with Leicester, as the visitors earned two points by winning the penalty shoot-out.
The Foxes were superior offensively through most of the match, hence the penalty shoot-out win reflects a deserved result. Despite Yuka Momiki’s spot-kick miss, Michelle Agyemang and Maisie Symonds also could not convert, handing Leicester the extra point.
The Seagulls struggled creatively for most of the game and only began to attack convincingly in the last 30 minutes following Nikita Parris’ introduction from the bench.
Both teams would have hoped for a better first half, but Leicester had the better chances. Momiki’s shot from ten yards out was caught by Melian Loeck, whilst Hannah Cain’s close-range required a heroic block from Symonds.
Shaky passing among Brighton’s defence almost led to an embarrassing mix-up at the start of the second half, but Symonds spared their blushes by clearing the ball.
Leicester continued to ask questions. Missy Goodwin was a constant threat on the left flank, and Momiki rattled the bar from outside the box just past the hour mark.
Brighton’s best chances came late on. Michelle Agyemang had a shot destined for the bottom corner but it was blocked.
After 90 minutes, the penalties confirmed that Leicester gained an additional point.
The failure to win means Brighton are on four points, with Leicester one behind. Group D is now left wide open after Brighton missed a chance to automatically qualify for the League Cup knockouts.
