In the first half, both sides had flashes of danger. Once again, the US used inverted wingers and fullback overlaps to create overloads on the flanks. They were successful in delivering numerous fine crosses.
Iran showed considerable class on the counter. There were backheels, flicks, and some solid balls being played into dangerous space.
The difference maker came after a brilliant diagonal pass from Weston McKinnie to Sergiño Dest on the right edge of the box. From there, Dest played a one-time header across the box, which Pulisic finished to make it 1-0.
A few minutes later, Weah had the ball in the back of the net, but the flag was waved for offside.
The second half started more slowly. Neither side were able to muster up clear-cut chances.
In the latter stages of the half, Berhalter managed the game well and brought on defensive subs in Zimmerman, Moore, Acosta, and Wright to soak pressure in a back 5.
After a couple of penalty shouts and some iffy moments, the Stars and Stripes got it done.
Regarding Pulisic, there is no update at this time, but Berhalter had great things to say about him.
“It’s a wonderful thing when one of your best players is one of your hardest working, and he’s certainly that. I can’t say enough positive things about Christian,” Berhalter said.
