Kieran Clark got himself sent off nine minutes in the game which cost his side on Eddie Howe’s first home game as they could only draw against relegation rivals Norwich City. Goal from Callum Wilson and Teemu Pukki meant the two teams drew the game with one goal each.
Newcastle United got off to the worst possible start to the game with Clark getting sent off for a ridiculous foul in the 9th minute. Clark took down Pukki as he was through on goal on purpose which resulted in the early dismissal.
Billy Gilmour almost scored from the resulting free kick which was well saved by Martin Dúbravka in the Newcastle goal. After the red card the quality of the two teams showed as in the rest of the first half there wasn’t much quality on show as the two teams didn’t create any clear cut chances.
Newcastle was awarded a penalty after a VAR check due to a handball from Gilmour. Callum Wilson was able to convert the penalty as Tim Krul almost saved the penalty but couldn’t stop his former side taking the lead.
Pukki equalised for Norwich with a thunderous volley inside the Newcastle penalty area. The Newcastle goalkeeper, Dúbravka, will feel like he should have done better with the initial cross in which he fumbled which lead to the Norwich goal.
For the rest of the game Norwich City pushed forward trying to steal a late winner which they failed to do. The best chance went Pierre Lees-Melou who was one-on-one but his shot was saved by Dúbravka. The result means that both sides are still in the relegation zone, with Newcastle still looking for their first three points of the season while Norwich are three points from safety.
