Home   /   Conor McGregor v Dustin Poirier 2 – As It Happened

Tonight the second chapter of the fight series takes place as Conor McGregor faces Dustin Poirier at UFC 257.

The first fight between these two took place in 2014 and ended with a McGregor victory. He won by TKO after one minute and 46 seconds – a very impressive victory that helped emphasise McGregor’s ability and helped take his career to new levels. Will we see a similar result tonight?

Poirier has greatly improved since the last fight. He has accumulated big victories against the likes of Max Holloway, Eddie Alvarez, Dan Hooker and many more. In 2019, he became the interim lightweight champion of the world just proving how much he has improved. He is certainly a much better and more improved fighter now. Certainly won’t be an easy task for McGregor.

As we all know McGregor has done it all in the UFC. Former lightweight champion and former featherweight champion – and he held the belts at the same time. He will be confident knowing he has beaten Poirier before.

The fighters weighed in last night at 155lbs (McGregor) and 156lbs (Poirier).

Before these fighters take to the octagon we saw a very big main card of fights and some top performances. Here are the results from all the previous fights:

Marina Rodriguez v Amanda Ribas – Rodriguez wins by KO in the second round.

Andrew Sanchez v Makhmud Muradov – Muradov wins by TKO in round three.

Jessica Eye v Joanne Calderwood – Calderwood wins by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28).

Dan Hooker v Michael Chandler – Chandler wins by TKO in round one.

Here come the fighters. McGregor enters the octagon first. He has the same swagger he always does and you can tell who the favourite is in this one. Even when there isn’t a full arena McGregor gets the crowd going.

Dustin Poirier enters the octagon now and I have to say he looks confident. Certainly a different fighter to the one we saw back in 2014. Could we see a shock victory here tonight?

HERE WE GO!

Round one: An interesting and fairly even first round. Poirier doing well with a takedown and getting the clinch but McGregor stayed strong and did well to keep Poirier at bay. Some decent strikes from both men as well with some strong shots landing. Back and forth shoulder strikes in the clinch and some decent hooks and crosses from both men. The calf kicks from Poirier could come back to haunt McGregor with almost all of them landing. Seems like it could be a decent fight early on.

Round two: WOW! IT IS ALL OVER! ‘The Diamond’ Dustin Poirier gets the win at UFC 257. He continued to beat up the leg of McGregor throughout the round then landed some huge shots that put McGregor on his back. Lots of combinations against the fence and ends it with a huge hook. Such a big victory for him – probably the biggest of his career.

A huge night of fighting finished up with a huge victory for Poirier. Is a title shot with Khabib Nurmagomedov on the cards? I would think so after this outstanding performance.

McGregor promises another fight in 2021 after taking the defeat graciously. A tough pill to swallow. He will want the third fight and a chance to get a piece of revenge and put the tie at 2-1.

Result: Poirier wins by TKO in the second round
