The Netherlands booked their place in the quarter-finals of the World Cup as they saw off a youthful USA 3-1.

The goals came from Memphis Depay, Daley Blind and Denzel Dumfries. Dumfries also assisted the other two goals.

Netherlands have now reached at least the quarter-final in five of their last six appearances at the World Cup.

The USA started the first half brightly. Christian Pulisic had a shot well saved from close range in the 3rd minute after a lofted ball from Weston McKennie.

Shortly after, the Netherlands opened the scoring as Depay finished a Dumfries cross in the 10th minute.

The US applied pressure late in the second half but were undone on the stroke of half-time as Blind swept in another low Dumfries cross.

Tim Ream had a shot cleared off the line from a corner early in the second half.

Pulisic’s cross was flicked into the top corner by Haji Wright in the 76th minute to restore hope for the Americans.

Dumfries then buried a cross from Blind in the 81st minute to end any American hopes of a comeback.

Next up for the ‘Oranjes’ is a clash against Argentina or Australia in the quarter-final.
