Despite coming into this game on the back of three drab goalless draws in a row, United flew out the traps and into the lead through a Bruno Fernandes penalty after Anthony Martial was brought down in the box by Gabriel Jesus with a textbook striker’s challenge.

Just like the start of the first half, United came out brave and on the front foot in the second and took control of the opening 20 minutes by grabbing the second goal through a swift counter-attack started by Dean Henderson.

Henderson, deputising for David De Gea, showed his strengths in distributing out to Shaw, who beat Joao Cancelo to the ball. The left-back then linked up with Marcus Rashford before it being fed back to him in the penalty box with the Englishman rolling his left footed effort low across Ederson.

City as expected pressed and tried  to pick the lock of United’s defence but were unable to find a way past the strong back line and the inspired Henderson, who certainly made good of his chance in the spotlight.

The result only seems to delay the Citizen’s title victory with the visitor’s poor form of late allowing their noisy neighbours to pull away. However, it’s an important three points for the Red Devils in their Champions League bid and will only be looked on fonder after Liverpool’s loss earlier in the day.

United host AC Milan midweek in the Europa League before another key game in the top four battle against an in-form West Ham United side next weekend.
