Lucas Hernandez is the latest Frenchman to drop out of the 2022 FIFA World Cup after rupturing his Anterior Cruciate Ligament in their 4-1 win against Australia.
The Bayern Munich defender went down in the build-up to the first goal of the contest scored by Australia and had to be replaced by his brother Theo Hernandez.
A subsequent scan has confirmed a ruptured ACL in his right knee, ruling him out from football for the foreseeable future.
Following the match, French manager Didier Deschamps said:
“Like the whole group, players and staff, I am extremely sad for Lucas. We lose an important element. Lucas is a warrior and I have no doubt that he will do everything to return to the forefront.”
France’s next match in the tournament is against Demark, a side that beat them twice in the most recent edition of the UEFA Nations League.
