Saudi Arabia didn’t manage to maintain their leading position in Group C of the World Cup 2022 as they were defeated by Poland in the 22nd match of the tournament. The Green Falcons played well in the first half creating huge chances on the opposition’s goal; However, they were not capable of taking advantage of them. In contrast, the opportunist Poland did well to get better of their opponent, and found the net through Zielinski’s strike on Lewandowski’s assist in 39th minute.
Saudi Arabia showed a proper response to this goal when, minutes later, they were awarded a penalty after a foul on Saleh Al-Shehri. Nevertheless, this set of efforts didn’t lead to a celebration since the captain Salem Al-Dawsari missed the penalty, facing a brilliant save from Szczesny.
In the second half, Saudi Arabia continued their attacking performance, although they wouldn’t open the scoring. On the other side, Poland played better than the first half, creating serious opportunities, two of which ended up hitting the woodwork. Finally, it was a gift by the Saudi Arabia defender that helped Robert Lewandowski seal the win for Poland by scoring his first goal in Qatar World Cup.
