Due to the influx of social media, increased level of public scrutiny, and rigorous physical and mental demands, athletes are statistically more likely to experience mental health issues within the modern age, with non-profit organisation Athletes for Hope estimating approximately 35% of professional athletes experience problems with their mental wellbeing.

However, performance psychologist Dave Collins believes a change in an athlete’s biopsychosocial background may consequently have the greatest impact on an athlete’s mental wellbeing.
