Home   /   Preview: Arsenal v Southampton

Sub-edited by William Munt

Despite the increased amount of pressure on Russell Martin ahead of his clash with Arsenal, he is insistent that the owners “want to work through things together the same way as they did last year” and that “they’ve been so supportive”.

Southampton have equalled their worst start to a league campaign, set in 1998-99 with one point from six games.

“It is not a path you want to be on if there’s no bumps on the road,” Martin said, explaining “myself more than anyone is frustrated we haven’t won yet”.

The Saints will be without Jack Stephens for this fixture as his ban was extended for two games due to abusing officials. “He apologised,” and “he’s frustrated with himself,” Martin said.

A win for Arsenal can move them top of the league, providing Liverpool lose, but Arteta is not putting pressure on his players. “We set out with the same ambition and determination to win the game,” he said.

Arsenal will be without key player Martin Odegaard, meaning the Gunners have had to find alternative means to create goals. “The impact Martin has is too big to replicate in one player” and “we do miss him,” Arteta said.
