Russell Martin played down concerns about his future amid Southampton’s difficult start to their Premier League return.
Southampton sit 19th with just one point from their first six games, but Martin refused to be drawn on speculation about his job.
“The opinions that matter are the ones of my bosses,” he said. “As long as I am aware what they feel and we are all working together, everything else is just noise and irrelevant to my position.”
If Southampton are to kick start their season though, they will have to win a Premier League game away at Arsenal for the first time, having lost 16 and drawn eight of their previous 24 matches there, according to BBC Sport.
The hosts’ start to the season contrasts with Southampton’s, as Arsenal remain unbeaten and could go top if Liverpool drop points at Crystal Palace earlier on.
Their manager, Mikel Arteta, continued to play down their title prospects despite their solid start. “It’s super early – I think for me we just started” he said, “You can feel already the tension in every match.”
With a win though, they will only enhance their credentials, whereas another defeat would cast further doubt on Russell Martin.
