Manchester United tried everything to get that goal they needed to win the group, even bringing on Harry Maguire as a striker with just under 10 minutes still to play.
In added time there was a goalmouth scramble, with Casemiro getting a shot off at goal which was blocked.
This result means that Real Sociedad top the group and Manchester United will have to play an extra two-legged tie against one of the third place Champions League teams, that possibly being Barcelona or Juventus. Even with the loss, Real Sociedad fans will be delighted to win five out of six in the group and come away as winners.
