Safer Gambling Week 2021, which takes place between 1-7 November, aims to kickstart a national conversation on the vital subject between staff, customers and their friends and family, alongside highlighting the range of tools that are available to help people stay in control of their betting.
According to research conducted by the Statista Research Department in March 2021, the largest percentage of problem gamblers in Great Britain were individuals aged 35 to 44. Comparitively, no respondents aged 65 years and older stated that they were problem gamblers.
Footballer Scott Davies, formely of Reading FC, discussed his gambling addiction he developed earlier in his career, how he overcame this and the advice he’d give to anyone struggling with addiction issues.
“For me, gambling was something that entered my life at the age of 16,” Davies said.
“As the success came with football, I started to bet bigger amounts. I started to lose control of what I was doing.”
To help fight gambling addictions, Davies believes it’s vital to reach out and seek help.
“I tried to beat it alone for a very long time and when you’re in the midst of an addiction it’s really difficult to do that,” Davies revealed.
