Saudi Arabia didn’t manage to win a single point in their third fixture in the World Cup group stage and, as a result, failed to progress to the knockout phase of the competition. They faced Mexico who desperately needed a win to remain hopeful to go through the round of 16.
The first half saw different attempts from both sides, but none scored. Finally, Mexico opened the scoring through Martin three minutes into the second half. They kept pressure on their Asian opponent and managed to double the lead via a magnificent free kick from Chavez. Saudi Arabia couldn’t control the situation to come back. The Mexicans continued their dominance on the pitch although they didn’t score again. While Mexico were looking for another goal in the stoppage time to take over Poland in the group, it was Saudi Arabia who scored a goal. Salem Al-Dawsari found the net in the 95th minute and assured Poland team regarding their place in the World Cup 2022 round of 16.
Saudi Arabia ended their 2022 World Cup campaign up standing at 4th place of the group with three points which were achieved in a historic victory over Argentina.
