Dynamic duo, Vinicius and Rodrygo, had a rare night off the ball, disappearing during arguably the biggest game of their season – whilst Mbappe didn’t take the penalty he won so Vinicius could have his ‘I’m him’ moment and yet, sent his attempt into the stands.
Athletico Madrid played like they had never-ending petrol in their engines, even after 120 minutes on the pitch. The players pushed and pushed, penetrating Real’s backline but couldn’t find the target more than once.
Connor Gallagher showed his Conference league ridden former side that they let a shiny gem go astray. Athletico call him a pitbull and all his doubters tonight realised why. He constantly nipped at the ankles of the world’s best, like they were nothing more impressive than a Sunday league side.
Athletico may exit the competition much earlier than planned, but they go out heads held high, knowing they can rattle any opposition at any time.
Real Madrid advance to the Quarter Finals once again, and are one-step closer to engraving their name for the 16th time.
