Mariona Caldentey fires Arsenal into the semi-finals of The Subway Cup. The Gunners were victorious but it did not come with ease. The Seagulls were able to get their first chance from the scraps Arsenal had carelessly given away with Seike receiving the ball inside the 33rd minute only to drill her attempt over the bar. Lina Walti was forced off just before the half-time whistle with Captain Kim Little coming on and collecting her armband from McCabe.

Reneé Sleger’s side struggled initially with Brighton’s defence seemingly made out of brass, just like the band playing in attendance. Under the flood lights at Broadfield Stadium, the Gunners were beginning to believe they were in dreamland with three quick fire goals all under 10 mins apart from each other. Frida Maanum was able to open up the Seagulls defence during the 65th minute followed by Alessia Russo selflessly giving up a clear chance for Katie McCabe to easily put it into the open net. Cooney-Cross seemingly out of nowhere delivered a thumping finish into the top right corner.

The result now see’s Brighton suffer back to back high score defeats against Arsenal following their last clash in November ending 5-0 against the Gunners. Arsenal are now on a 10 game unbeaten streak while the Seagulls have not been victorious since early December.
