22 time Grand Slam Champion Rafael Nadal has officially announced his retirement, bringing to an end one of the most illustrious careers in tennis and sport.

“Everything has a beginning and an end, and I think it’s the appropriate time to put an end to a career that has been long and much more successful than I could have ever imagined,” Nadal said in his retirement video posted on social media.

As one of the members of the ‘Big Three’ who defined a golden era for men’s tennis, Nadal walks away from the sport having won four US Opens, two Australian Opens, two Wimbledon titles and most notably 14 French Open championships.

Throughout his career, he dictated points with his signature forehand and relentless shot making from the baseline. And he psychologically overwhelmed and outlasted opponents with his passion, tenacity and a work ethic that never seemed to run on empty.

Contemporaries of Nadal were some of the many who offered tributes and praise for the ‘King of Clay.’

Roger Federer, arguably Nadal’s greatest rival and who was famously defeated by Rafa in the 2008 Wimbledon final, said: “Thank you for the unforgettable memories and all your incredible achievements in the game we love. It’s been an absolute honour.”

Novak Djokovic, the only man to have won more grand slam titles than Nadal with 24 to date, also shared a heartfelt tribute on social media.

“You have inspired millions of children to start playing tennis and I think that’s probably the greatest achievement anyone can wish for…Your legacy will live forever,” Djokovic wrote.

Having spent a lot of time struggling and sidelined with injuries the last two years, Nadal gave one final message to fans in his retirement video.

“I leave with the absolute peace of mind of having given my best, of having made an effort in every way. I can only end by saying a thousand thanks to all and see you soon,” he said.

Nadal’s final professional tennis match will be in November in Malaga where he will represent his native Spain for the last time in the Davis Cup finals.
