England’s new favourite weight-loss tool Monjaro. It’s quickly become one of the most talked-about medications in the UK, especially online, where people have been sharing their dramatic before and after results using the drug. With more than a million people in the UK estimated to be using it, it’s clearly more than just a passing trend. But what exactly is Monjaro, and why has it taken off so strongly in the UK compared to something like Ozempic in the US?

At its centre, Mounjaro is a once-weekly, self-injectable medication – originally developed to treat Type 2 diabetes. It belongs to a class of drugs that affect hormones involved in appetite and blood sugar control. More specifically, it acts as both a GIP and a GLP-1 receptor agonist, helping regulate how your body processes food. In simple terms, it reduces hunger and the feeling of food noise and makes you feel full quicker.

What makes Monjaro stand out is just how effective it appears to be compared to older medications. In clinical trials, some participants lost over 20% of their body weight, which is a huge number for a non-surgical treatment. That kind of result has made it especially appealing to people who have struggled to lose weight with usual techniques such as long term dieting and regular exercise. The drug is highly recommended by doctors as well, stating it as a “game changer” for weight loss, so  It’s not surprising that it’s now being seen by many as a kind of shortcut or “hack,” even though that label doesn’t really capture the full picture of the drug.

Ozempic has been widely trending in the US, but in the UK, it is only prescribed to people with Type 2 diabetes. Monjaro, on the other hand, has increasingly been offered through private clinics and online weight management services, making it more visible and, in some cases, can be found in shops like Superdrug if you’re willing to pay.

This brings up the biggest downside to the drug in the UK, which is that  Monjaro isn’t cheap. Prices typically range from around £140 to £330 per month, depending on the dosage and provider. Lower doses, like 2.5mg or 5mg, tend to sit on the cheaper end, while higher doses—such as 10mg to 15mg—can easily push the cost above £300 a month. For many people, that’s a serious financial commitment, especially since the medication is usually taken long-term to maintain results.

It’s also worth remembering that, despite the hype, Monjaro isn’t a magic fix. It works best alongside lifestyle changes, such as an improved diet and frequent physical exercise. There can also be side effects, including nausea, digestive issues, and fatigue, particularly when starting the medication or increasing the dose. Like any prescription drug, it’s something that should be used under proper medical guidance instead of being treated casually and coming off the drug stops the appetite suppressant, so individuals typically slowly gain the weight back.
