Home   /   Wales exit, beaten but proud

Wales World Cup campaign ended after a 3-0 defeat to England left them bottom of Group B.

A historic victory would have been required to see them progress to the round of 16 but it never looked likely. The first half came and went with Wales seeing little of the ball.

Rob Page’s team sat back and allowed England to control possession. The further the game went on the more confident England became.

In the 50th minute Marcus Rashford curled a free kick into the top right-hand corner. A minute later, Ben Davies lost possession allowing Harry Kane to square the ball to Foden for a tap in.

And that was it, in the space of a minute, any feint hope of a last heroic performance was extinguished.

Rashford completed the scoring in the 68th minute drilling a shot through the legs of Danny Ward

There would be no further magic moments from Gareth Bale. Wales perennial hero was withdrawn at half time due to injury.

Wales fans will return home conflicted, proud of their team but also knowing that the world did not see them at their best.

Let’s hope they don’t leave it another 64 years before gracing this stage again.
