Predicted XI
After a 64 year absence Wales are off to the World Cup as Rob Page looks to lead his Welsh dragons into the deeper depths of the tournament and create history for the nation. In their recent history they reached the round of 16 in Euro 2020 where they finished 2nd in their group but then lost to Denmark in the first knockout round. However their best tournament run came in Euro 2016 where they miraculously reached the semi finals by beating Belgium along their way but lost to eventual tournament winners Portugal.
How far can Rob Page take his side in this World Cup?
Find below my best Wales starting eleven that I’d pick if I was the manager!
GK: Wayne Hennessey
An ever present in the National side, Hennessey is currently at newly promoted Nottingham Forest however only played on two occasions for his previous side Burnley. He is a reliable pair of hands for Rob Page to build his team from.
CB: Ben Davies
Davies has looked a new player since the arrival of Antonio Conte where his defensive game has improved massively. He’ll provide versatility also by being able to play at wing back if required.
CB: Joe Rodon
Swansea youth product Rodon, who initially broke into the Spurs team in 2020 is currently on loan at Rennes. Calm and composed playing out from the back he’ll be the man to move his side up the pitch.
CB: Ethan Ampadu
The Chelsea man, who is currently on loan at Spezia, is a confident ball playing defender which will have a big impact on the way Wales progress up the pitch. He’s also capable of stepping into midfield.
LWB: Neco Williams
A flying wingback who is Premier League proven can operate on either flank Williams will be a constant threat for Wales in which he’ll look to provide plenty of crosses into the box for his sides attackers.
CM: Aaron Ramsey
One of the most experienced in the team, Ramsey has 75 caps along with 20 goals for Wales. He will be the man to turn defence into attack through a quick transition. Wales fans will hope he can relive his prime years.
CM: Joe Allen
Allan poses all the qualities of an all-round solid midfielder who possesses a wealth of experience within the football league. He will more likely be the man to do the ‘dirty work’ to allow the more technical players around him to flourish.
RWB: Connor Roberts
Similar to Williams but from the opposite flank Roberts is a keen
defender who puts his body on the line but also is effective when overlapping down the right and stretching the opposition again providing the crosses in the box for the attackers.
LW: Daniel James
Known for his electric pace and skill James will be giving defenders nightmares with his ability to beat a man and create space in the attacking third, as he looks to get the Welsh fans on the edge of their seats.
ST: Kieffer Moore
Wales target man Moore loves an important goal as he should for Bournemouth in their play offs last season, Welsh fans will be hoping for more of the same on the worlds biggest stage.
RW: Gareth Bale
Everyone’s hero, the captain and five times Champions League winner, Bale will bear the responsibility of being the man to lead Wales as far as possible in this tournament. Could it be his last for his country?
