Wilder fight night is Europes premier and largest student fight night organiser, founded in Durham in its current form in late 2021. Wilder Fight Nights have revolutionised the way that student charity black tie boxing events are operated. With wilder hosting events across 24 separate locations, Brighton is one of them and what an astonishing night it is!
Brightons most recent student fight night was hosted at the student loved venue, Pryzm, on March 13th. Brightons round seven fight night raised an incredible total of £14,803 for the oddball’s foundation and WBC cares UK, with the total being raised overall being £71,296. The Oddball’s foundation is the UK’s leading charity raising awareness of Testicular Cancer. Testicular Cancer is the most common cancer affecting men ages 15-49 in the UK. Oddballs mission goes beyond awareness, they educate people of all ages about the importance of regular self-checks, they encourage early detection and break down the stigma around men’s health. With this charity effecting young men the ages they are at university, this is an amazing charity for Brighton Fight Night to raise money for as this could be their first time hearing about the details of Testicular Cancer and could help lots of young men to catch this early!
WBC Cares UK, the non-profit organisation that Brighton Fight Night also raised money for are a charity dedicated to making boxing accessible to all and creating social change. WBC Cares UK have big championships supporting little champions in boxing. They offer inclusive programs to make the sport accessible, regardless of age, ability, or income. They focus on youth boxing initiatives, adaptive boxing for individuals with disabilities, and mentoring to improve mental health, confidence, and fitness across communities.
Prior to the event, fighters get 6-8 weeks of intensive training and nutritional advice, equipment, and kit. Students get to push themselves out of their comfort zone, make new friends, raise money for some really important causes, and get to be encouraged by their peers throughout the incredible black-tie event night.
Having attended the round seven Fight Night, the event was electric! The crowd bought the energy, with home made banners and endless chants. University of Brighton and University of Sussex students hosted the night, which I felt really got the crowd involved as we are all students in this city and all here for the same thing. I was supporting my friend who was brave enough to take to the ring, Melwyn Laurner, AKA Melwyn ‘supernova’ Laurner. She said “as nerve-racking as the night is, it is all worth it! It is for such a good cause, and the vibes of the night could not have been better. I encourage any students who are debating it to just go for it! It will be something you will never forget.”
Applications are now open for the next round of Wilder Brighton Fight Night. Do you think you have what it takes to become a round eight champion?
