Home   /   World Cup Final Preview: Destiny is within touching distance for Messi

Argentina looks to prise the trophy from the current holders France at the Lusail Stadium this afternoon.

For Argentina it would be their first World Cup trophy since 1986 while France would be the first back-to-back winners since Brazil in 1962.

All attention has been on Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe to see which superstar can lead their team to victory. Lionel Scaloni, though, believes it would be a mistake to just focus on Messi and Mbappe.

Scaloni told Reuters: “We both have the necessary weapons so that the game can be decided by other players and not necessarily the two of them. Let’s hope it falls on our side, but there are plenty of players who can decide the game.”

Didier Deschamps understands that many neutrals want to see Messi and Argentina win. The France manager said to the BBC: “I know Argentina, many people around the world, and maybe some French people, hope Lionel Messi could win the World Cup, but we’re going to do everything to achieve our objective.”

France’s squad has been affected by a bug in the run up to the game with Raphael Varane and Ibrahima Konate the latest to be affected.

This is potentially Messi’s final game for Argentina and its certain to be an emotional finale whatever the result.
